Seven Rules for Buying a Digital Printing Machine

Now, almost every printing company has a digital press to meet customer requirements. What choices should you make when facing a variety of digital printers? The following are the nine basic principles for choosing a digital press.

1. Understand the market

Who are your customers and what do they want? You already have some ideas for the printing products your customers want to buy and which digital printing technologies you can use. At a recent print buyer conference (Los Angeles), 60% of buyers said they were willing to choose digital printing.

Digital printing features different speeds, ranging from 40 pages/minute to 136 pages/minute. Products that are often produced by digital printers include: brochures, flyers, direct mail (postcards and personal mail), books, and so on. In addition to the terminology, there are many other products. Not all offset jobs are suitable for digital printing. Paper size and printing speed are advantages of traditional printing presses, but at least half of the jobs can be produced using digital printing technology.

2. Digital printing is different

The performance of colorants and ink jets is very different from that of inks, and often requires the use of special paper.

Powdered colorants require the use of paper capable of holding or transferring electrical charges. Liquid colorants may require the use of specially coated paper. Inkjet printers also use special paper. The good news is that designers no longer have to choose between ten grades of paper – some papermakers have already developed paper that is suitable for both digital and lithographic offsets, so a job can also be Print in two different ways.

Before the actual printing, people usually have to make some adjustments to the file to make it reach the desired state.

Toner-based color printers have a better color gamut than some four-color offset printers—I recommend that you print a color chart for the designer. In general, equipment, digital color printers have five-color configuration, in order to expand the color gamut of printing, and the use of liquid color printing presses have seven-color printing capabilities, to meet people's demand for spot color printing.

3. Digital presses are different from those we know

Digital presses and ordinary presses are very different in speed, page size, color printing capability and others. There are two types of digital presses, sheet-fed and web-fed. The maximum page size for a sheet-fed printer is 14 x 22 inches, and the maximum image width for a web printer is 19 inches. Most digital presses can easily print 8.5 x 11 inch and 11 x 17 inch images, and some can print on 12 x 18 inch pages.

Primary color printers often generate static electricity, so humidity control is very important. Some digital presses have a fixed temperature and humidity control system that allows these machines to work in the right environment. However, there are some exceptions to the model, and people need to provide special space for these machines in order to better control the environment around the machine.

Quality is no longer a problem. Although some customers use small magnifiers to check the amount of printed materials, for most print buyers, they are concerned about reaction rates, goods circulation, and sales. Digital printing can bring them all the digital publishing they want, and even more.

4. Cost is no longer a problem - value is the most important

Digital presses often use pay-per-click methods to pay for maintenance and usage. Sometimes they can also pay for consumables. This fee is usually calculated based on monthly usage - the higher your usage per month, the lower the price of pay-per-click. However, there is one point to note: Even if you do not reach a certain amount, you must pay for this month's usage. Therefore, you must analyze your work so that it reaches a certain amount. Most suppliers have the right tools to help customers do the job.

If you can find suitable value-added services, then the monochrome printing market is still promising. On-demand printed books, shell prints, and professional reports are areas where monochrome printing can be developed. The traditional monochrome printing market is shifting towards the popularization.

5. Your supplier is your partner

Unlike digital presses, only your supplier can provide you with toner/inkjet inks, other device components and services. Find related people and call them. If you do not get proper support, you can't do a good job of doing well. This is not a major issue of intellectual property, but it will also be territorially limited, but it is better to talk to other users and learn about their feedback on everything from repair response time to payment. opinion.

Printing proofs are very important to you. Most vendors will let you test with typical print files. So you can test real print jobs on the system you want to buy. This will give you an understanding of the equipment's processing and production speed, problem documentation, and print quality.

Some vendors allow you to use credit card accounts. A printing company that I know often pays employees on mileage miles.

6. Movement and digital front end

Digital press cores are parts that are actually stamped with paper. Digital front-end systems can receive documents and process them for the production of the press. Sometimes they are called RIPs, but the ensembling process is only part of their job. Some digital press suppliers will provide customers with a bundled software package, and some suppliers will let you choose from a number of digital front-end systems.

Choose your digital front end system carefully. If there are a large number of complex files to deal with, then it will become a bottleneck. The digital front-end system is part of your workflow, and, under normal circumstances, the workflow can only be used to its maximum efficiency when the convergence is accurate.

7. Standby equipment

Many devices have very limited processing power. Once your job fills it up, you have to spend a lot of time looking after it. You have to have a full-time operator. He should be able to control one or more presses and be able to handle most of the operating procedures.

Commercial printers may also consider the use of back-up equipment when they encounter important work schedules that are relatively tight. Although it may not be as accurate as the main production equipment, it can at least have the same digital front-end functionality and print quality as the main equipment.

Some suppliers have designed multiple models for their product lines, which allows consumers to upgrade their equipment to the latest and fastest models at any time. When replacing two printers with one printer, be careful, even if their production speed is the same, you have to consider: You only have one printer and no spare device.
