New medical and industrial revolution: Freescale Kinetis microcontrollers

China Education Equipment Purchasing Network News: Freescale Semiconductor has announced that its high-growth Kinetis 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) product line is welcoming a new member-the Kinetis K50 series. This series is mainly aimed at medical and industrial applications, further expanding the industry's most extensive and most scalable product portfolio based on the ARM Cortex-M4 processor.

The K50 microcontroller series provides multiple connection options for continuous monitoring and an integrated measurement engine for reliable analog signal processing in applications such as portable medical equipment, instrumentation, and industrial test and measurement equipment.

"Our K50 microcontroller series is opening up new worlds in measurement and monitoring," said Jeff Bock, Freescale's director of industrial and multi-market business marketing. "This new series enables multiple connection options for many industrial and medical applications, precise analog signal processing, and a broad and scalable best-in-class combination."

The enhanced monitoring and measurement capabilities of the K50 series are particularly important to the medical market, as medical devices are increasingly transitioning to portable. Because the K50 series can shorten development time and increase functionality-all operating at very low power, this allows medical designers to quickly adapt to market trends and provide portable and networkable devices that end users expect.

Scalable and easy to use

With the scalability of the Kinetis combination, ease of use of software, and modular hardware development tools, the K50 series brings extraordinary freedom in design. The K50 series (including K50, K51, K52 and K53 four sub-series, a total of 40 devices) is compatible with more than 200 other microcontrollers in the Kinetis product portfolio. Moreover, the huge software ecosystem allows developers to freely choose their favorite IDE / software compiler.

The K50 series can also be used as part of Freescale's modular Tower development system, which can shorten development time by months through rapid prototyping and tool reuse. In addition, Freescale allows customers to bundle free MQX â„¢ RTOS and communication stacks with K50 products, further reducing development time.

Comprehensive measurement

The K50 series' unique integrated measurement engine allows reliable processing of external analog signals without the need for expensive additional components, thereby reducing development costs. An operational amplifier and transconductance amplifier are integrated, and a high-speed 16-bit analog-to-digital converter is used to convert and capture the signal, providing accurate and timely results. These enable on-chip signal processing.

Multiple monitoring options

The K50 series provides multiple on-chip monitoring interfaces, including Ethernet, integrated low-power LCD controller, capacitive touch sensing module, and supports numerous communication protocols (USB, UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, or external bus) , Provides a variety of connection options for continuous monitoring. This connectivity enables industrial and medical applications to continuously monitor, evaluate, and control system variables. The communication of medical devices can also be achieved through the USB personal care device class and the Continua® connection library.
