Upgrade to support multi-touch support on 4D-Touch platform

Semtech (Nasdaq: SMTC) recently released the SX8674/75/76/77/78, a multi-touch resistive touch screen controller that will bring to Semtech's 4D-TouchTM platform. The SX867X series is part of Semtech's 4D-Touch platform's ultra-low-power controller, which includes innovative features such as long-range proximity detection and advanced tactile drive support in an extremely compact footprint. They also feature powerful ±15kV ESD protection for a wide range of applications such as cell phones, tablets, DSCs, handheld GPS, IP phones, printers, car consoles, and POS terminals.

The 4D-Touch device also features a high-precision 12-bit analog-to-digital converter for coordinate and touch pressure measurements, with power consumption as low as 0.4uA in standby. They can enter a low power state at transition intervals and are therefore suitable for portable applications. Unlike other touch screen controllers, the multi-touch operation of the SX867X device does not require expensive matrix type resistive panels. The SX867X patented touch detection circuit supports a variety of common multi-touch gestures, such as touch zoom and rotation, on any 4-wire analog resistive touch screen.

The SX867X device also supports near-detection distances greater than 5 cm for any standard 4/5-wire resistive panel, enabling a variety of power-saving features such as automatic backlight adjustment or system wake-up when a finger approaches the panel. Traditional IR solutions require additional expensive components for proximity detection, and this new generation of resistive touchscreen controllers achieve proximity detection with zero external components.

The chip features a tactile motor driver for controlling linear resonant actuators (LRA) and eccentric rotating mass (ERM) micromotors (maximum current 250mA) while providing a response to touch events that simulates close to mechanical The tactile feedback of the buttons enhances the user experience. Immersion has certified the SX8677 and SX8678 as the preferred motor drivers for its TouchSense 3000® haptic waveform software components and is available to all customers through an Immersion license. Semtech's SX865X controller is pin-compatible with the above devices and functions exactly the same except for multi-touch gesture recognition, so manufacturers can develop multiple versions of the product using a single board design.

The SX8674/75/76/77/78 are available in a space-saving 2.07mm x 2.07mm 19-WLCSP package and in a 4mm x 4mm 20-QFN package. The touch-only SX8651 and SX8653 feature a small 1.46mm x 1.96mm 12 - WLCSP package and 3mm x 3mmm 12-DFN package (SX8653 is 4mm x 3mm 14-DFN). Semtech guarantees that all of these devices will operate over the extended temperature range (-40°C to +85°C).
