The latest development of CIP4 / JDF

Foreword:

In the past, the development of computerization and automation in the printing industry was developed independently in the fields of pre-press production equipment, printing machines and post-press processing. However, with the high degree of informationization and digitization of the printing process, the data Exchange and sharing become possible, and the concepts of CIM computer-aided manufacturing and MIS decision resource management system are introduced into the printing industry, so that the digital printing process can be fully coherent from pre-press, printing and post-press processing without hindrance. CIP4 is a business strategy alliance formed by multiple printing industry suppliers and academic groups. The alliance is committed to formulating common file exchange and data sharing formats to promote and realize the above ideals.

I. Introduction and evolution of CIP4 alliance:

The predecessor of the CIP4 alliance was the CIP3 alliance and the JDF alliance. The two alliances were officially merged into the CIP4 alliance on July 14, 2000. In principle, the content and structure of the CIP3 alliance developed unchanged, but the content developed by joining the JDF alliance became CIP4. Therefore, the CIP3 and JDF alliances are introduced first, followed by the CIP4 alliance.

1. CIP3 Alliance:

The original concept was developed in December 1993, the first draft of the file format was completed in September 1994, and the prototype was finalized for testing in December, which greatly increased the possibility of achieving the plan. So 15 companies including Adobe, Agfa, Fuji, Kodak, and MAN Roland , Heidelberg, Polar and other pre-press, printing and post-press processing suppliers formally formed an alliance in February 1995. The full name of the alliance is "International Cooperation for Integration of Prepress, Press and Postpress" referred to as CIP3, dedicated to the exhibition And promote the vertical integration of pre-press, printing and post-press processing. As of October 1999, 39 suppliers including computer, operating system, software, pre-press, printing, and post-press processing equipment manufacturers have participated, which is another large-scale international printing after the ICC International Color Alliance Research and development organization. The format developed by the alliance has been launched by relevant manufacturers of the alliance since June 1997. At the Drupa 2000 printing exhibition, it can be seen that almost all printing-related hardware and software suppliers have supported the CIP3 specification.

2. JDF Alliance

The JDF Alliance is composed of four companies that were former members of the CIP3 Alliance. These four companies are Adobe, Agfa, Heidelberg and MAN Roland. The alliance was established in early 1999. JDF is an abbreviation for Job Definition Format. Alliance members tried to combine the contents of management information and process information with hardware and software equipment, and considered to achieve horizontal integration in addition to the vertical integration sought by CIP3, and tried to integrate with the Internet.

3. CIP4 Alliance

Since the CIP3 alliance was established in Drupa 2000, in order to achieve the staged goals set at the beginning, most of the remaining work is to regularly update the format definition, and to accelerate the commercialization of the post-press processing part, and promotion work. When discussing the format and development direction of the next generation, it was found to be the same as the JDF Alliance hopes to promote, and the JDF Alliance also agreed to allow more manufacturers to participate in order to become a common format in the future without being restricted to a closed system. After the Drupa 2000 printing exhibition, an agreement was reached on July 14, 2000 to merge into the CIP4 alliance. The full name of the alliance was added to the original three Ps. "Process" became "International Cooperation for Integration of Processes" in Prepress, Press and Postpress ".

4. Member composition category and member introduction

Because the scope of the CIP4 alliance ’s attempts to standardize and define is wider than that of CIP3, and some parts involve non-printed parts, the members of the alliance feel that it is necessary to further brainstorm and accept suggestions from various parties, so they also amend the membership charter. In order to maintain the efficiency of the alliance's operation and maintain the attributes of a commercial strategic alliance, new members and academic groups are accepted as much as possible.
