3D printers are rapidly emerging, making home manufacturing possible, but does this mean the end of mass production?
What is 3D printing ?
This is a revolutionary production process, from toys to jewellery to machine parts, which can be printed directly into a physical product from a digital model, including plastic, metal or ceramic. This was originally a scene in science fiction, but it has developed rapidly in recent years.
Today's 3D printers are getting smaller and smaller, faster and cheaper. The basic 3D printer is only as large as a microwave oven and sells for less than $1,000. With it, anyone can become a manufacturer.
"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno printed a rare part of his classic car with a $30,000 3D printer. “It’s like the scene I saw in The Jetsons when I was young: they went to a machine and pressed the button and the steak was ready.†Reynolds said, “Just, I got It’s not a steak, it’s a part of a classic car.â€
How does a 3D printer work?
Just as traditional inkjet printers inkjet on a line-by-line basis, 3D printers paint the material layer by layer and slowly shape it. To perform 3D printing, the designer first needs to use the computer software to create a virtual 3D model, and then another program horizontally slice the model and issue instructions to the printer to copy the model layer by layer.
Some printers use a computer-controlled heated nozzle to move back and forth on a printing platform to melt the material and print it. Still others use a laser or electron beam to melt a powdered plastic or metal into the desired shape. After each layer is printed, the print platform is lowered and a new layer is added until all printing is complete.
