Recently, a group of college students and lecturers are now coming to Africa more than 2,500 miles away, they are here to plan to test their 3D printed solar cars. These teachers and students come from the Johannesburg University Solar Project Group, which is mainly engaged in energy substitution research, energy management and sustainable engineering design, and is responsible for the design and construction of solar vehicles that are powered by solar energy instead of traditional energy.
As early as 2011, a group of engineering bachelor students began to produce the first series of solar cars Illanga (Zulu meaning "the sun"), and then participated in the 2012 solar sands competition. The project has now been developed to the second version of Illanga II, which has been expanded to include students from engineering, industrial design and marketing departments.
At the University's Manufacturing Research Center, engineering project manager Warren Hurter, also one of the three test drivers, said to China's 3D printing network: "Ilanga II is completely solar-powered, and its road trip kit also includes a 3D printer. The 3D printer can work in any situation, allowing parts to be replaced at any time during such a tough journey in Africa."
