Furniture frying retro concept is getting old

"‘Well, new furniture—why do you have to make it look old?’ Ms. Wang asked, puzzled when she was helping her daughter choose furniture. She couldn’t understand why old-looking pieces were so popular these days. In an interview, the reporter discovered that in the past two years, vintage-style furniture has become a hit among young consumers. Despite its aged appearance, it comes with a hefty price tag—up to 50% more expensive than brand-new furniture. ‘Since last year, old-style furniture has been selling better and better,’ said a salesperson at a furniture store in Tianjin. Once associated mainly with traditional Chinese styles, old furniture now includes British and American designs as well. According to the reporter’s findings, the high cost of old furniture is largely due to the craftsmanship involved in aging the pieces. At Peace Home, for example, furniture made using traditional aging techniques was 50% pricier than regular new furniture. A four-door wardrobe made with a wood-and-wood combination sold for 9,500 yuan, nearly matching the price of a solid wood version. Many customers have questioned whether wood-and-wood furniture is actually more expensive than all-solid wood options. A staff member from Xiqing District’s Point Wood Furniture Factory explained that the aging process itself adds to the cost. For instance, they create a ‘worn’ look by rubbing different colored paints on specific areas or using pumice to leave white marks on edges. ‘This process takes longer than just painting,’ the staff said. However, the reporter found that most of the so-called old furniture is actually wood-and-wood combinations, which are not as durable as solid wood. The term refers to furniture where the main frame is solid wood, but the front and back panels are made of composite boards. During production, glue is used to bond the panels, which can result in a strong smell over time. Despite this, many young consumers in Tianjin still love the idea of old furniture. One customer told the reporter, ‘I like the feeling that the furniture is aged.’ This trend reflects a successful marketing concept that appeals to people’s desire for nostalgia and character.
