What to wear for ice climbing

The first ice climbing friends often tangled up what to wear to deal with the ice climbing campaign. Here I share some experiences based on my 10-year climbing experience. I hope to inspire my new friends.

Let me introduce myself first. My name is Bao Yifei, Boya Outdoor Sports School, Leading Mountaineering School, and Coach of China Mountaineering Association. Ice climbing began in 2004, responsible for the KAILAS ice climbing season. Shuangqiaogou's coaching staff work. We discuss them separately from tops, pants, accessories (hats, headscarves, socks) and gloves (especially important).

Let's talk about the tops, from the inside out, I will wear a Merino wool underwear, this material has a good feel, warm, moisture permeability, especially in winter, physical comfort is much higher than that of various chemical fiber Quick dry underwear. Then I will put on a thin fleece that is close to my body. This is my warmth layer. I hope it is flexible and close-fitting. Then the outer layer of climbing, soft shell is often the best choice, reasonable cutting, flexible space for activities, windproof breathable, there is a certain degree of water repellency. KAILAS ice climbing soft shell is indeed the best I have used, it uses seamless welding technology (Overlapweldingtechnology), the appropriate shoulder and waist ratio, very suitable for ice climbing. Jackets? Forget it, when the ice climbing jacket swollen and inconvenient, but also easy to arch in the seat belt position, very inconvenient. When climbing, these are enough. When I'm at rest, I'm going to bring a fat down jacket because the rest is very cold. The large down jacket gives you enough warmth when resting and protecting, so that you can be comfortable outdoors. Stay one day.

Then talk about pants, this time from outside to inside, soft shell pants is the first choice, for the same reasons, Slim stretch, windproof and comfortable. Many new friends will break their trouser legs when they begin to climb ice. This is often due to the overweight of the trousers. It is not just distressed trousers. Now KAILAS also has professional ice climbing pants, but I have not used it yet. Some friends will wear windproof running pants in winter. I think it is also good, as long as they are self-cultivated and have good wind protection. Inside, I will choose according to the temperature and place to go, where the temperature is higher, the inner layer I wear Merino Wool underpants, and the colder places I will wear the close-fitting fleece warm pants because we are outdoors One day of ice climbing, it is unlikely to replace the trousers, so the removal of the large down jacket from the upper body is the main means by which we adjust the temperature.

The attachment, first of all, is a hat. The hat must be able to be worn comfortably in a helmet first, not too much decoration, or too thick, or you may not feel where your helmet is. Wool and fleece are all good materials. It is important to fit together. Is it windproof? I don't think it's okay. Your helmet is always windproof. The headscarf is a good thing. It can be a thin hat, a scarf, and a mask. Socks I will choose the thick socks of Merino wool, must be high enough to avoid the high-altitude boots. Normally I wouldn't wear two pairs of socks, which would affect blood circulation and flexibility. A pair of high-height wool thick socks would be enough. Protective glasses, I feel ready to go, but I'm not used to it, although my nose and face were cracked in Long Bi last year.

Gloves, I think it is very important, especially when you start pioneering. The most important thing is a large, ski-free cotton glove that is inflexible and I won't use it. Then it is breathable. After a day's climbing, sweaty hands will wet the gloves. This time it will be very cold and uncomfortable. Breathability is far more important than waterproofing. Warming is also needed, first of all, under the premise of drying, so I usually bring two pairs of gloves, replace it in the clothes to dry and keep warm. KAILAS has professional ice climbing gloves, but generally I use it for a long time. It's too hot in the afternoon. I'll put on some thin fleece gloves. The flexibility is more important. When I protect, I sometimes use thick gloves that are more wear-resistant and keep warm. There are some friends who use golf gloves and it feels good.

These are some of my personal experiences. I hope to help new friends and to wear suitable climbing activities. Of course, there will be some special circumstances, such as the ice wall with heavy water, I may still bring Jackets and waterproof gloves, so it is still necessary to choose according to the actual situation. If you only have Trousers, it may be helpful to shrink your legs with tape. Prepare for equipment and wish everyone to enjoy "ice poison." (Originally transferred from Bao Yifei Weibo)
