Paper and plastics in the food packaging industry

The food industry is the largest user and beneficiary of packaging. The development of the food industry and packaging are inseparable. In some cases, the new packaging process can greatly change the product structure, industrial structure, and development of the food industry. A typical example is the combination of packaged beverages and sterilization processes. The emergence of packaging beverages and the improvement of shelf life have greatly expanded the sales channels of beverages, resulting in the intensive development of beverage companies and the emergence of beverage giants.
The use of paper and plastic paper and plastic materials in the food industry is most common in the food industry. In general, the largest amount of paper packaging is used in paper bags, followed by paper cups and paper lunch boxes, followed by paper outer packaging. There are many forms of plastics used in foods. Plastic bags and plastic bottles are the main forms of packaging. Due to the fact that the food industry is too large and too complex, only the major items are cited and the application of paper and plastics is analyzed.
Food grain packaging a few years ago was mainly cloth bags with a single specification. With the refined processing of rice and other foods, the packaging forms and specifications have also undergone great changes. Plastic woven bags have become the main packaging form of rice. Packaging specifications also tend to be miniaturized, from 20 kg to 5 kg and even 2 kg are common. Some bulk foods in supermarkets use paper bags because of their small packaging, but they are generally based on plastic packaging. The surface of the large package is still dominated by sacks, and the use of paper bags on small packages of flour is common.
Oils The packaging of edible oils is entirely the world of plastic containers. PET bottles and PE bottles have an absolute advantage in edible oils, and paper packaging is completely useless; aluminum foils, such as butter and cheese, are used for packaging, but plastic packaging accounts for the majority, which is in line with the excellent oil-repellent properties of plastics. There is a direct relationship; most ice cream packages are packaged in plastic bags, and some of the barrel products contain cartons and paper cups.
Candy Sugar was once the only form of candy, but it has now given way to plastic. Candy paper is basically reduced to collectibles. Individual varieties also stubbornly use paper packaging, but sales have been affected, especially in the summer, softened sticky sugar on the paper to make people completely lose their appetite. Chewing gum is an exception. Except for packaging, it is basically a paper package, but it will still cause inconvenience when it goes out in hot weather.
Household sugar plastic bags are the preferred packaging. Paper bags have basically disappeared.
Milk composite paper packaging greatly extends the shelf life of ultra-high temperature sterilized milk, laying the foundation for the large-scale development of dairy products companies. Upright milk packaging is also on the way. However, in a city like Beijing, which is close to large-scale dairy production companies, high-temperature sterilized milk packed in plastic bags also occupies an extremely important position and is the first choice for dairy products.
Meat Packaging There are few fresh meat products, and cooked meat products have a lot of demand for packaging. Basically, paper packaging is not used for the packaging of cooked meat products. Plastics, especially composite plastic bags, are the main forms of packaging for cooked meat products. Only on the gift packaging, the carton is used for packaging.
Aquatic products Aquatic products contain a lot of moisture and usually require frozen storage. Paper packaging is rarely used. Plastic bags are a widely used form of packaging. Foam plastic boxes are used extensively for insulation packaging.
Instant food In the fast food category that is in the category of convenience foods, there are many paper packages, especially paper lunch boxes and paper cups are being used in large quantities; bagged instant noodles are entirely made of plastic materials, and instant noodle cups have been widely used in foamed plastics, but along with the country The promulgation of the ban, paper cups will have the opportunity to show their talents. However, the rationality of this decree is being questioned very much, and the relevant national authorities are reviewing it. The majority of plastics in biscuits are packaged. Individual biscuits use one carton in plastic bag jackets, and direct-contact biscuits have less use of paper. Materials; fast food staple foods are all plastic bags and trays, there is basically no paper packaging market; individual types of snack foods use paper packaging, such as melons and other small food, but the mainstream packaging is a plastic bag.
Beverages and wine In addition to paper composite packaging that can be counted as paper packaging, in the beverage market, plastic bottles, especially PET bottles, are the most important and compelling packaging. In the carbonated beverage, water and beer markets, there is no market for paper packaging; in the fruit juice market, paper composite containers have a relatively close market share compared with plastic containers; PET bottles have already appeared in the market of liquors, such as those produced by Wuliangye Group. Jianzhuang has all used PET plastic bottles. Plastic beer bottles are also in full swing development, with products already on the market in the United States and Europe. Although there are box-style wine packs in foreign countries, that is, the inner layer is made of aluminum-plastic composite bags, and the carton is packaged outside, but it has not yet appeared in China.
Canned Cans are a large category of products in the food industry, but their packaging is mainly in the metal and glass market. Although plastic soft cans appear, the proportion is still very limited and there is no paper packaging.
Condiment Carton loading salt has emerged, plastic bags are no longer the only packaging material; plastic bags of soy sauce have also appeared, plastic barrels of soy sauce, vinegar, etc. have broken the dominance of glass bottles. Monosodium glutamate, pepper and other small packaging is basically a market for plastic bags. Paper packaging is rarely used.
Evaluation Overall, plastics are more widely used than foods in food packaging. This is consistent with the material properties of the paper itself, especially in the packaging of liquid products, plastics and paper have unparalleled advantages. In spite of the increasing demand for the use of paper packaging in recent years, in addition to fast food boxes, beverage cups, instant noodles cups, and a small number of shopping bags, “substituting paper for plastic” is basically empty talk, because such a formulation itself is very Big problem.
Food packaging is a very active area. New products are emerging in an endless stream, but these improvements do not have an essential effect on the proportion of paper and plastic used in food packaging. Plastic packaging is mainly to improve the design and provide more convenience; to improve the structure of composite materials to meet more stringent requirements; new products for paper packaging are focused on functional improvements. For example, the United States and Japan have developed paper pads for fruit and vegetable packaging that can absorb ethylene and carbon dioxide gas released from fruits and vegetables, and developed products such as insulation paper and anti-corrosion paper.
Going out of the wrong area In recent years, the voice of "paper-based modeling" has been increasing. However, this argument lacks evidence. People are so keen on such a formulation, first because they see a lot of plastic packaging around the waste, and second, the media help.
Who is more environmentally friendly?
In fact, if any disposable consumption materials are not properly disposed of and their waste is not established, a system of reasonable consumption will cause environmental pollution. Europe is the best place for environmental protection, but it is still using plastic materials for food packaging. Their packaging waste disposal rate is very high, and they teach children to cultivate the habit of protecting the environment from throwing things at a young age, instilling the concept of “no waste, garbage is also a resource”, and implemented the establishment of classified waste bins for packaging manufacturers. It is helpful to collect a collection of waste recycling and disposal fees and establish a recycling factory. China has not formed a reasonable waste disposal system, nor has it supported the development and application of plastic waste disposal technologies. It is simply not considered that plastic materials are not as environmentally friendly and not serious as paper.
In the evaluation of environmental materials, Europeans adopt the whole process assessment method and do not think that paper is more environmentally friendly than plastic. From the perspective of resources and energy consumption, plastic is less than 1/2 more than paper; 1/6-1/5 of material consumption is less; 300 plastic bottles and one same capacity Paper cans are quite.
On the other hand, people think that paper is more environmentally friendly. It mainly means that pure paper is more convenient for recycling. In fact, the paper used on food packaging basically requires additional processing, coating or compounding to achieve the required characteristics. For example, a paper composite container for high-temperature sterilization is a combination of paper and plastic and aluminum foil, which can also be called paper. Waste composite containers cannot be decomposed and reused at all and can only be incinerated. Compared with PET, which can also be used for juice packaging, the latter can be completely recycled and reused.
Reducing misleads The public’s understanding of whether or not materials are environmentally friendly comes from media reports. What is a pity is that many Chinese media are keen on the hype of hearsay, and the voices of experts are often overwhelmed.
For example, the use of PVC as a packaging material in foreign countries is due to the fact that PCV waste will generate harmful gases when it is incinerated, but it has been reported to China that it has evolved into a poisonous PVC material; the use of foamed plastics in foreign countries is mainly prohibited by the use of foam that can damage the ozone layer. The agent, Freon, became a banned foaming plastic in China; in addition, it was reported in a packaging newspaper that: “Because of the increasing scarcity of wood resources and the need for environmental protection, some foreign companies have begun to produce paper furniture. I think that it is very promising ..., "I really don't understand what his paper is made of. Straw is obviously not enough. Only wood pulp with good wood can have such strength! With furniture made of paper that wastes energy and causes pollution, how can it be more environmentally friendly than furniture made directly from wood?
Paper and plastics will coexist for a long time in food packaging, and media reports should also be more professional. Do not mislead people because of their language hegemony.
