Build your own cardboard box snowman

One of the most popular requests during our holiday planning session came from the kids: they all wanted a snowman in the role-play area for Christmas. Honestly, who wouldn't want that? I thought it would be a fantastic idea to create a DIY snowman that they could assemble, decorate, and personalize however they liked. Their faces lit up when I shared the concept, and they were absolutely thrilled. I spent some time brainstorming how best to bring this to life, and after a bit of research, I decided to go with a cardboard version. I knew it would be fun, easy, and eco-friendly. For the materials, I gathered three cardboard boxes—one smaller for the head—and set out to transform them into a snowman masterpiece. White paint, glitter, and a few craft supplies were all we needed to get started. The kids jumped right in, painting the boxes and sprinkling glitter everywhere. It was pure chaos, but also pure joy. As for the details, I cut out an orange carrot nose and some round buttons from fluffy fabric. We could have used craft foam, but the fabric gave it that extra touch of texture and warmth. To make the snowman interactive, I attached sticky hook-and-loop fasteners so the pieces could be easily swapped out. By the next day—okay, more like that afternoon—we were ready to add the finishing touches. The setup included a basket filled with festive accessories: colorful hats, scarves, sticks for arms, and even a wig or two. The kids went wild with creativity, experimenting with different combinations each day. One particularly memorable moment was when they turned the basket itself into a hat for the snowman. It was hilarious and adorable all at once! As the snowman took shape, I couldn’t help but feel proud of their ingenuity. Watching them collaborate and come up with new ideas made the entire experience worthwhile. It’s always rewarding to see kids take ownership of their creations, and this project definitely hit the mark. Looking back, I realized I might not have been the first to dream up this idea. A colleague mentioned she’d seen something similar before, though I haven’t been able to track down the exact source online. If anyone recognizes it, feel free to let me know in the comments—I’d love to give credit where it’s due. Next year, I’m thinking of scaling down the project by using smaller boxes, like tissue boxes. Imagine all the tiny snowmen they could create! It sounds like such a sweet and manageable activity. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with these photos of our cardboard snowman creation. Pin this post if you're inspired to try it yourself—it's a great way to keep the kids entertained while fostering their creativity.
