In the Light by Ulla Koskinen
My eyes follow the soft glow of the Secto 4200 lamp as it casts its gentle light across the table. The bright center is surrounded by a warm halo, creating an image that feels almost like a flower or the sun. It could be the heart of a beautifully set table, a stage for delicate dishes, or the focal point of a cozy gathering. The way light and shadow interact here feels poetic, almost like a scene from a story waiting to unfold.
Light has the power to shape not just objects, but emotions. It can highlight, soften, or even transform a space. In many ways, the principles of lighting in theatre apply to our everyday environments. We instinctively dim the lights for a dinner party, focus illumination on the table, and let the rest of the room fade into the background. It's all about creating the right mood, and light is the perfect tool for that.
The contours of the Secto 4200 lamp light reflected on the table – the bright centre and surrounding halo of rays.
There are moments when we need clarity and awareness—moving between rooms, managing tasks, or simply staying alert. In those times, too much darkness can confuse the mind. Instead of calming, low light may make us sluggish. That’s why having different layers of lighting in one space is so important. A desk lamp for focused work, a ceiling light for general illumination, and a statement piece with intricate details to add character. Each light serves a purpose, and together they create a dynamic atmosphere.
The Secto 4200’s lampshade’s delicate wooden slats turn into intriguing figures as they filter light, at times allowing it to flow freely, other times obstructing its path.
Adjustable lighting can help bring energy during long winter nights or offer calm during stressful days. Light gives rhythm to our lives, especially now that more of us are working from home. Changing the lighting can signal the end of the workday and the start of relaxation. I often switch off my desk lamp and dim the main lights to transition into a more peaceful state. When I need to focus, I prefer a narrow beam of light—it keeps my attention where it needs to be.
As I take a moment to rest, I look up and watch how the light dances on the walls. The wooden slats of the Secto 4200 create shifting patterns, like branches casting shadows on a sunny day. The lamp’s form changes depending on the time of day and how much natural light is present. At the point where the slats come together, a beautiful gradient appears—an elegant blend of light and structure. It’s a quiet beauty, but one that speaks volumes.
