DIY Luna Lovegood Costume

If you're scrambling to find a last-minute World Book Day costume, it's tempting to rush to the nearest supermarket and grab whatever is available. If your child is a Harry Potter enthusiast, there are plenty of Harry or Hermione costumes to choose from. However, it's surprisingly simple to whip up a quick costume for one of the other characters and still make a splash. Molly wanted to dress as Luna Lovegood this year, and while it initially seemed a bit unconventional, it turned out to be quite doable with minimal effort. To create a Luna Lovegood costume, start by raiding your wardrobe. Luna’s style is unique because she combines everyday items in unexpected ways. The key pieces include a skater skirt, sneakers, and a blazer—colors don’t matter much. She also pairs her outfits with bright tights or striped socks, which can easily be found in any closet. For additional touches, we used Amazon Prime Now, which is fantastic for last-minute needs. Within an hour, you can have items delivered, perfect if you've run out of time to prepare. They offer a variety of costumes, including options for adults and even pets. We picked up affordable witch costumes for the twins and cat-themed accessories for them. To add authenticity, we crafted a few props to bring the character to life. You don’t need to do everything; even one or two additions can make a difference. One standout accessory is the radish earrings, which are iconic for Luna. Making them from FIMO clay is straightforward and fun. My 9-year-old managed to create hers in about five minutes, and after baking them for half an hour, they were ready. Unfortunately, my new oven got the temperature wrong the first time, and they ended up burnt, but we quickly fixed it. For the earrings, you’ll need red, green, and white FIMO clay. Start by rolling a ball of red clay, gently pulling one end into a stalk-like shape using white clay. Top it with green leaves made from small, differently shaped green clay circles. Once baked and cooled, thread a loop of green clay through a wire to complete the earrings. Since Molly doesn’t have pierced ears, we made a large loop that fits over her ears, but pierced earrings work just as well. Another essential is Luna’s Spectrespecs. To create these, gather sunglasses, craft foam or card, strong glue, and Sharpies. Trace the glasses’ outline to size the frames, then draw the unique lens shape and cut them out. On the reverse side, Molly drew patterns of circles and stars, inspired by photos from the movies. If your sunglasses have clear lenses, you can color them red and blue for realism. We found tinted sunglasses online, which added an authentic touch. To further accessorize, we made a Butterbeer cork necklace. Using a sharpie, draw a “B” for Butterbeer on a cork, then create a wire loop and secure it into the cork. Thread the loop onto an old necklace, and voila! You’ve got a simple yet charming accessory. Finishing touches can include a knitted bag, a copy of The Quibbler (either drawn or printed), Quibbler badges made with a badge maker, a wand, a broomstick, a side ponytail, and a dreamy, slightly surprised expression. With these elements, your Luna Lovegood costume will be complete. We thoroughly enjoyed piecing this costume together, and we hope it will be instantly recognizable on World Book Day.
