— The 2014 Global Pioneer Design (China) Awards Have Been Announced
Last month, the 2014 “Global Pioneer Design (China) Award†was officially announced. This year's winners included not only well-known design studios but also a number of young talents from the "post-80s" generation. Their fresh and unconventional approaches have impressed many, proving that innovation is no longer limited to seasoned professionals. Now in its second year, the award has quickly become a significant event in the Chinese design scene. With a jury composed of eight international judges from various countries, the competition has set high standards for creativity and originality. Over the past three months, the judges carefully evaluated hundreds of entries, resulting in 17 bronze awards, 8 silver, 6 gold, and one annual excellence award, totaling 32 honors.
The Global Pioneer Design (China) Awards aim to recognize the most innovative and forward-thinking designs of the year. Many top design firms participated, making the competition extremely intense. The international panel included Jurgen Bey from the Netherlands, Shashi Caan from the United States, William Paley from the U.S., Thomas Dariel from France, Manuel Collado Arpia and Nacho Mart Asuncion from Spain, Ashwini Deshpande from India, and Danny Fang from the Netherlands. These experts emphasized fairness, international perspective, and a focus on pioneering ideas throughout the selection process. Among the winning projects was "Common Symbol" by Xiamen Sulin Design Office, which received the Excellent Design Award. Jurgen Bey, a renowned Dutch designer and dean of the Amsterdam Art Institute, praised the finalists, saying that "Common Symbol" stood out due to its potential to become an internationally recognized work. He called it a strong starting point for future global recognition.
Several young designers from Shenzhen, including Liang Xuanke and Wang Quan, also made their mark this year. In addition, several design agencies from Taiwan showed impressive performances. For instance, the International Interior Design Engineering Co. Ltd. submitted “Return to Nature,†though it didn’t win gold, other works like “Terminal Limit,†“Deep House │ Dialogue,†and “Invisible†earned silver and bronze medals. This highlights the growing influence of the Global Pioneer Design Awards in Taiwan. Meanwhile, Shenzhen Xinye Group Design Consultant Co., Ltd. emerged as the biggest winner in the entertainment category, with their projects “Xi’an Diamond Club Bar,†“Jiejie Dance Club,†and “Chongqing CLUB.1†securing multiple awards, showcasing their strong creative capabilities.
For mainland designers to once again claim the only annual award, the organizer expressed both surprise and excitement. “This reflects the rapid progress of design in China,†she said. “We need to keep up with the pace. The international judges value the foresight and exploration in the work, which strengthens our confidence in using international judges.†It’s also reported that the Pioneer Award will be presented during a design study tour in the U.S. for the 2013 and 2014 annual awards, further expanding its global reach.
