Internationalization of Chinese design, starting with international judges

——2014 Global Pioneer Design (China) Awards Announced

Recently, the 2014 “Global Pioneer Design (China) Award” was officially announced by the Global Pioneer Design Association. This year’s winners included not only well-known design studios but also a group of young talents from the post-80s generation, who have shaken up the traditional design scene with their fresh and innovative approaches. The award has now completed its second edition, featuring a panel of eight international judges from around the world. Since its launch, the event has become a platform for emerging designers to showcase groundbreaking ideas, making it a unique phenomenon in China's design community.

The Global Pioneer Design (China) Awards aim to recognize the most innovative and forward-thinking design projects of 2014 across China. Many top design firms participated in the competition, which proved to be highly competitive. The international jury included renowned experts such as Jurgen Bey from the Netherlands, Shashi Caan from the United States, William Paley from the U.S., Thomas Dariel from France, Manuel Collado Arpia, Nacho Mart Asuncion from Spain, Ashwini Deshpande from India, and Danny Fang from the Netherlands. They evaluated entries over three months, following a strict process based on fairness, international vision, and innovation. In the end, 17 bronze, 8 silver, 6 gold, and one Excellent Annual Award were given out, totaling 32 awards. Xiamen Sulin Design Office received the Excellent Design Award for their project “Common Symbol.”

Jurgen Bey, a Dutch design expert and dean of the Amsterdam Art Institute, praised the finalists, saying that he carefully reviewed each entry before selecting “Common Symbol” for its strong potential to become an internationally recognized work. He also noted that several young designers from Shenzhen, including Liang Xuanke and Wang Quan, stood out in this year’s competition.

The executive director of the Global Pioneer Design Awards highlighted that this year’s competition saw a stronger presence from Taiwan-based design agencies. For instance, Original International Interior Design Engineering Co.’s “Return to Nature” did not win gold, but other works like “Terminal Limit,” “Deep House │ Dialogue,” and “Invisible” earned silver and bronze medals. This reflects the growing influence of the award in Taiwan. Meanwhile, Shenzhen Xinye Group Design Consultant Co., Ltd. emerged as the top winner in the entertainment category, securing multiple awards for projects such as “Xi’an Diamond Club Bar,” “Jiejie Dance Club,” and “Chongqing CLUB.1.”

When asked about the mainland winning the only annual award again, the designer expressed both surprise and excitement, saying, “This shows how rapidly Chinese design is advancing. We need to keep up with the pace. The international judges focus on future-oriented and exploratory work, which makes us more confident in our approach.” It is also reported that the Pioneer Award will hold a ceremony in the U.S. for the 2013 and 2014 annual awards, combining it with a “design study tour” experience.
