What Could Have Been Done Differently for Our "Bad Packaging" Winner?

Our "Bad Packaging" contest wrapped up at the start of January, and we were flooded with entries showcasing all sorts of poorly designed packaging that our Facebook followers had encountered! While it’s always amusing to see these examples, it also gives us a chance to suggest better alternatives—balancing the need for products to arrive intact with keeping costs down and reducing environmental waste.

The winning entry (as shown above) featured a tiny SD card enclosed in a massive cardboard box stuffed with extra paper padding, even though the item was already packaged in its own cardboard-and-plastic container. Clearly, this is a prime case of overpackaging that doesn’t make for a pleasant customer experience.

But with some packaging expertise, there are far better options available!

We’d recommend using bubble-lined envelopes, like those from brands such as Arofol or Jiffy. These postal bags come with a layer of bubble wrap inside, offering cushioned protection ideal for shipping delicate electronics like SD cards. They also boast a tough, tear-resistant outer material and a peel-and-seal closure for added convenience.

One of the key advantages of bubble-lined envelopes is their ability to fit through standard letterboxes. This means customers can easily collect their packages without needing to go out of their way, adding a touch of customer satisfaction. Plus, this approach would significantly cut costs and minimize waste compared to the original setup.

By opting for this more efficient and eco-friendly solution, the retailer could have saved money while ensuring the product reached its destination safely. It's no exaggeration to say that bubble-lined mailers represent a smarter, more sustainable choice.
