Poor sleep or increased risk of prostate cancer

Poor sleep can cause a person to lose energy and focus, but the effects of poor sleep are much more than that. A new study shows that poor sleep may also increase the risk of men suffering from prostate cancer.

Researchers from the University of Iceland reported on the 7th in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention in the United States that sleep damage to health has become a common problem in modern society. For example, previous studies have found that women who sleep poorly have a high risk of breast cancer. But scientists do not know the link between sleep problems and male prostate cancer.

In this new study, the researchers targeted more than 2,100 Icelandic men aged 67 to 96 to study the effect of sleep on prostate cancer risk. They first investigated the sleep quality of these subjects and found that 14.4% of them had severe or very serious sleep problems, including difficulty falling asleep, easy to wake up at night, and early morning waking up. None of these people had prostate cancer when they participated in the study, but after five years of follow-up research, 6.4% of them had prostate cancer.

After considering factors such as age, the researchers found that the risk of prostate cancer in people who sleep poorly is 1.6 times to 2.1 times that of people who do not have sleep problems. The researchers said that if this result is verified by further research, then to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, sleep may be a potential intervention target.
