Research Reagents-Neochlorophyll can capture infrared light

Scientists have extracted a new type of chlorophyll from the cyanobacteria in Australian shark reef-the fifth kind of chlorophyll (called chlorophyll f), which can absorb red light and infrared light. Using this new chlorophyll, researchers are expected to allow solar cells to convert more light energy into electrical energy and improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency of solar cells.

The research team led by Chen Min of the University of Sydney in Australia discovered this new chlorophyll. They said that this newly discovered chlorophyll f exhibits a much redder absorption spectrum than other types of chlorophyll, and it can absorb the wavelength range. Near-infrared light from 0.7 microns to 0.8 microns (the wavelength of infrared rays is 0.77 microns to 1000 microns, divided into near infrared and mid-infrared), which makes this chlorophyll the most red chlorophyll found so far.

Their findings suggest that photosynthesis can be extended even further to the infrared band. Researchers say this is expected to promote the development of solar cells. Since more than half of the light emitted from the sun is infrared, manufacturers of solar panels have been developing various new technologies to enable solar cells to absorb light other than red light. Chen Min said that nature can obtain more sunlight through such a simple modification of chlorophyll, why don't we draw a calabash according to the gourd?

Zhang Shuguang of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology believes that it can directly use chlorophyll to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cell it is developing. Zhang Shuguang had previously used the protein photosystem I in spinach leaves to make solar cells. The protein contained about 200 chlorophyll molecules capable of concentrating light.

James Barber of Imperial College London in the UK said that adding this new chlorophyll to solar cells can play a role: with different types of chlorophyll that can absorb light at different wavelengths, solar cells can capture a wider range of the sun Light is very important for solar cell design and artificial photosynthesis technology.
